Scurvy SYMPTOMS: Dr Hilary Jones issues warning over Vitamin C deficiency –

Rob Hobson, Healthspan Head of Nutrition said: “It’s also interesting that some of these cases are occurring amongst those following the popular carb-free way of eating to lose weight, which makes a case for ensuring your diet is well balanced.

“But avoiding scurvy should be easy. There was an excuse in days gone by when fresh fruit and veg was scarce and expensive. Today it is not.”

Dr Hilary said eating five servings of fruit and vegetables per fay from either fresh, canned, frozen or dried will provide people with more than enough vitamin C.

“Storing them for too long can deplete the vitamin C so be aware of that,” he said.

“Foods that are particularly rich in this nutrient include citrus fruits, red peppers, dark green vegetables, kiwi and berries.

“Vitamin C supplements are available also in various formats such as Healthspan’s Ruby Effervescent Vitamin C tablets to drink or swallowable vitamin C tablets which seems like a good insurance policy since only 27 per cent of adults aged 19-64 meet the 5-a-day recommendation for fruit and vegetables, for example.”

This comes as it was revealed vitamin D could protect you against cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
