Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahya said although Vitamin C had proven to cure most flu symptoms, it was uncertain if it would have a similar effect on dengue or Zika patients as the viruses were of a different strain.

“There is no doubt Vitamin C possesses health benefits but the effects vary for different types of viruses,” he said.

“It works for most flu symptoms, for instance, but those symptoms are milder than those of dengue or Zika.”

He suggested the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) conduct a study as it had the necessary allocations and expertise.

Dr Hilmi was responding to a question from Dr Azman Ismail (PKR-Kuala Kedah) who asked if the ministry had plans to use intravenous Vitamin C treatment for dengue and Zika.

A total of 90,506 dengue cases have been reported nationwide as of November 5 — a 12 per cent decrease from the same period last year.

The number of fatalities from January to November last year was 283, compared to 208 in the corresponding period this year.

The number of Zika-positive cases in Malaysia from September 1 to November 5 remained at seven.
