Elijah Cummings declines Trump administration invitation to tour Baltimore housing facility – Washington Examiner

Rep. Elijah Cummings declined an invitation from the Trump administration to tour a federal housing facility in Baltimore on Wednesday.

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson invited the Maryland Democrat to tour a HUD facility in Baltimore. Baltimore’s chronic rodent and garbage problems hit national news recently after President Trump escalated a feud with Cummings, who is chairman of the House Oversight Committee.

Cummings, 68, received the invitation to tour the facility Tuesday evening but was unable to attend because of a scheduling conflict, his office told the Washington Examiner.

Carson made plans to visit the city after Trump called Cummings’ district, which includes most of Baltimore, a “rat and rodent infested mess” on Saturday. Trump escalated his attacks on Cummings throughout the weekend, calling the black congressman a “racist” who mistreats federal law enforcement officers working on the U.S. southern border.

Democrats have defended the House Oversight chairman and the city, calling Trump’s attacks “racist.” The Baltimore Sun, the city’s primary newspaper, has also hit back at the president, calling him “the most dishonest man to ever occupy the Oval Office.”
