Illinois state trooper dies in highway crash – WTHR
CHICAGO, Ill. (WMAQ) – An Illinois state trooper died Saturday morning after a head-on crash on Interstate 94 near Libertyville.
WMAQ reports 36-year-old Gerald Ellis was an 11-year veteran of the Illinois State Police District 15 in Downers Grove.
The crash happened around 3:25 a.m., police said. Ellis “was on-duty in his squad car traveling home on I-94 westbound…when a wrong-way driver, who was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes, struck Trooper Ellis head on,” WMAQ reported, citing a police press release.
Ellis died at a local hospital just after 4 a.m. according to the Libertyville Fire Department.
The other driver also died.
Trooper Ellis leaves behind a wife and two children.
The crash comes two days after Trooper Brooke Jones-Story was struck and killed by a semi-trailer near Rockford.
