Jeff Flake tells Republicans: ‘There’s still time to save your souls’ – Washington Examiner
Former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake is urging Republicans on Capitol Hill to pull their support for Trump in the upcoming 2020 presidential election.
Flake wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post published on Monday and titled “Fellow Republicans, there’s still time to save your souls.” The piece comes after a raucous week in Washington, D.C., in which Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry into Trump.
Flake decided against running for reelection in 2018 after being highly critical of Trump during the president’s first two years in office. The then-senator judged that his opposition to Trump would have cost him the election anyway.
The 56-year-old former lawmaker said he believes Trump’s actions are worthy of impeachment, but he has “grave reservations” about taking the step, including making Trump even stronger in the “chaos.”
“If the House decides against filing articles of impeachment, or the Senate fails to convict, Senate Republicans will have to decide whether, given what we now know about the president’s actions and behavior, to support his reelection,” Flake wrote. “Obviously, the answer is no.
“My fellow Republicans, it is time to risk your careers in favor of your principles. Whether you believe the president deserves impeachment, you know he does not deserve reelection,” he continued. “Trust me when I say that you can go elsewhere for a job. But you cannot go elsewhere for a soul.”
