US, Russia Discuss Iran Talks – RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty
The Kremlin says that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry have met in Lausanne, Switzerland to discuss the status of negotiations with Iran on its nuclear program as well as “key regional and international issues” in the Middle East.
The meeting late on March 29 came at the end of a day of intensified talks with Iranian negotiators as a March 31 deadline looms to reach a framework accord meant to pave the way for a final agreement by June 30.
Senior diplomats from Iran, Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States are to continue the negotiations on March 30.
The so-called P5+1 group wants a deal that ensures Tehran cannot develop nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions against Iran.
Tehran reportedly has indicated a willingness to reduce the number of centrifuges it uses and send stockpiles of enriched uranium abroad.
But early on March 30, there were still differences on reaching a framework accord.
