The secret to longevity might be hidden in a small town just north of Benevento. Among the 3,500 citizens of San Marco dei Cavoti are several dozen residents who are aged at the century mark. Researchers from the Italian Center for Rheumatology believe that a combination of healthy lifestyle and vitamin D (from the sun) have contributed to the well-being of the town’s senior citizens. A study has now been commissioned to study the lifestyles of those aged 90-100, focusing on their quality of life. The goal is to prove that a certain gene (called VDR-FF) plays an important role in longevity when modified by vitamin D. If proven, it could lead to breakthroughs in the approach to arthritis and osteoporosis.
